Torta de tres leches is a cake made out of three different kinds of milk. Translated from Spanish it means exactly that. (Torta=cake, de=of, tres=three, leches=milks). This cake is very common in South and Central America and is really, really delicious.

Ingredients:
  • 180 grams all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 115 grams unsalted butter
  • 225 grams white sugar
  • 5 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 500 millilitres whole milk
  • 400 millilitres sweetened condensed milk
  • 350 millilitres evaporated milk
  • 120 grams white sugar
  • 60 millilitres water
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation:

Grease and flour a baking pan and preheat the oven to 175°C. Put flour and baking powder together. Mix butter and sugar until it is fluffy. Therefore add eggs and the 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract and beat it well. Next, add the flour mixture carefully to the butter mixture and blend it until it is well-assorted. Then pour the dough into the prepared pan and bake it for 30 minutes. Pierce the cake several times with a fork.
Blend the whole milk, condensed milk and the evaporated milk together and pour it then over the top of the cooled cake.
Bring in a small pan water and sugar to boil until the sugar is caramelised it becomes a sirup. Whip egg whites until soft peaks form. Keep whipping and slowly pour the syrup into it. Add vanilla and mix until stiff, shiny peaks form. Spread it on the top of the cake. To give it that certain something uses a blowtorch to burn the mixture you just spread over it.
Keep the cake refrigerated. ¡Buen provecho!
